Conversation, Coupling and Complexity: Matching Scaling Laws Predict Performance in a Joint Decision Task

چکیده
CENTER FOR SEMIOTICS Recent approaches conceive of linguistic conversations as interpersonal synergies: In dialogue, interlocutors’ actions and cognitive processes become nonlinearly coupled and interdependent, enabling collective cognitive processes [1-3]. We apply complexity matching a measure of coupling across multiple time-scales to joint decision dialogues to investigate if interlocutors’ linguistic behaviors displayed increasing coupling over repeated interactions. Furthermore, we ask if stronger coupling is an index of more effective interaction, as measured by collective task performance.

Time-Series Analysis of Embodied Interaction: Movement Variability and Complexity Matching As Dyadic Properties
There is a growing consensus that a fuller understanding of social cognition depends on more systematic studies of real-time social interaction. Such studies require methods that can deal with the complex dynamics taking place at multiple interdependent temporal and spatial scales, spanning sub-personal, personal, and dyadic levels of analysis. We demonstrate the value of adopting an extended m...
متن کاملThe Effects of Task Complexity on English Language Learners’ Listening Comprehension
This article reports on the findings of a study that investigated the impact of manipulating task performance conditions on listening task performance by learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). The study was designed to explore the effects of changing complexity dimensions on listening task performance and to achieve two aims: to see how listening comprehension task performance was aff...
متن کاملAn Investigation into the Effects of Joint Planning on Complexity, Accuracy, and Fluency across Task Complexity
The current study aimed to examine the effects of strategic planning, online planning, strategic planning and online planning combined (joint planning), and no planning on the complexity, accuracy, and fluency of oral productions in two simple and complex narrative tasks. Eighty advanced EFL learners performed one simple narrative task and a complex narrative task with 20 minutes in between. Th...
متن کاملChanging in the Reaction Time Causes the Confidence Matching in Group Decision Making
Introduction: Others’ decision could constantly affect our decisions. There are numerous studies which revealed this effect properly. The social influence could affect most of the decision parameters, especially the confidence. Recently, an interesting study showed that participants tend to match their confidence to each other while they preserve their decision accuracy in a group decision mak...

This study aimed to investigate the impact of task sequencing, along +/- reasoning demands dimension, on writing task performance in terms of accuracy. The study was motivated by Robinson’s Cognition Hypothesis (CH) as well as previous studies investigating the relationships between task complexity and second language production. The participants of the study were 90 intermediate students at t...
